During the First World War Oliver spent some time in Pett Farm in Stockbury, with his cousins, including Ethel Gransden, daughter of Richard and Julia Terry. Ethel would have been about 16 at this time.

21 May 1917 War office received a request from W.A. Dudney asking for information on his two nephews, members of the Imperial Australian Forces. Oliver had been reported wounded and missing since 11 Apr in France.
Stimpson also reported missing since 11 Apr in France.
29 May 1917 W.A Dudney informed that at present no information was known of the whereabouts of his two nephews. He is advised that six weeks is the least time that they would be able to advise him of the whereabouts of his nephews. He is also advised that if he hears anything himslef please let them know as they undertake to supply all Australian Prisoners of War with regular parcels of food. He was also informed that the war office would let him know as soon as any information came to lite.
15 Jun 1917 Stimpson Gransden informed that his brother Oliver has been missing since 11 Apr 1917, and they have been unable to trace him, at this stage.
17 Jul 1917 Olivers family were informed that Oliver was a Prisoner of War, Interned Limburg- Captured Bullecourt 11 Apr 1917.
Stimpson Gransden informed that his brother Oliver Gransden is a Prisoner of War in Germany.
14 Nov 1917 W.A. Dudney informed the War Office taht he had received cards from Oliver and Stimpson and that they were alive and well. He had also been corresponding with another soldier pte F. Jones 27th Battalion, France, but had recently received a returned letter from his unit with the envelope marked deceased.
16 Nov 1917 Transferred to Friedrichsfeld.
18 Mar 1918, Oliver going well, having trouble getting enough food.
10 May 1918 Received 43 grocery parcels and 27 bread parcels, was healthy.
28 Jul 1918 On a farm in Farchim, seems to be in good order, comments that this is a little different to Leger.

Esther Francis Dealy was born 1 on 17 Feb 1894 in Chiltern, Victoria, Australia. She died 2 on 29 Sep 1988 in Adelaide, South Australia. She married 3 Oliver Arthur Gransden on 1 Oct 1919.
