Noted in 1841 census as living with two children Ann and Stephen. rebecca is 20 years old, Ann is five and Stephen is three. She is living next door to two Philpott families, possibly related to her through her sister in law. There is no indication that Rebecca is working so it is likely that Stephen is still supporting her even if he is not in the house on the night of the census. Hollingbourn, Stockbury, Kent

The children living at home with Rebecca are Elizabeth 6yo, Eliza 5yo, William 2yo, Harriett 3mo all born, Stockbury, Kent, England. Rebecca and her family are living at Bredgar, Kent. Living with them is William Hunt a 50yo lag lab, who's birthplace is unknown.There may well be other children for this couple but at this stage they are unable to be found. It is also possible that Rebecca remarried in 1851, but if so why did she keep the same surname?

In 1841 Robert Gransden and family live on Borden (or Border), Street and included along with Robert and Frances are children John (age 16), Jane (age 14), Ann (age 12), Richard 9age 10), Mary (age 9), George (age 8), Robert (age 5), Frances (age 3), and Elizabeth (age 7mo).
1851 census- Robert Gransden and family reside at Wood Cottages, Borden, Family members recorded in the census include Robert and Frances with children John-24, Anne-22, George-17, Robert-14, Richard-21, Elizabeth-10, William-8, and a grandson- Albert David Gransden (age 4mo). There was not indication as the parents of Albert David Gransden. Not recorded in this census year was daughter Jane who whould have been 24 years old, Mary who would have been 19 and Frances who would have been 13 years old. Daughter Jane and Mary were probably married at this time. Thus far nothing has turned up on the life of Frances after 1851.
1861 Head of the family Robert Gransden apparently died prior to the taking of the 1861 census as the 1861 census shows Frances as a widow- head of the family. Other members of the family include son Robert-25, son William-18, and Grandson Albert David-10. A search of the BDM index has a death for a Robert Gransden in the first quarter of the 1860 index in the district of Milton, County Kent.
The next time the Grandson Albert David Gransden appears is in the 1891 census. He and wife Sarah reside at 34 Saint Paul's St in Borden Kent- in the same enumeration district as Robert and Frances in the 1841 census.
Frances death record is in Free BDM Death Index: 1837-1983 Record. The quarter of registration was Jan-Mar, Milton Dist. County Kent. frances was 69 yo when she died.

1861- Unable to locate John in census records. Frances Gransden is a widow and still lives with many of her children.
1871- St Mary, England. John's wife Charlotte (age 36) is recorded in the census under her married name 'Charlotte Gransden' along with her mother Charlotte Hunt (age 65), daughter Jane -16, son george C.-3yo and daughter Ann 3mo, no mention of John. Residence was 17 Cross St. Charlotte migrated to America in the autumn of 1871 but there is no menion of John going with her. When looking at later census records there is a John married to an Eliza (this may not be the same John).

Charlotte had a daughter born out of wedlock- Jane Hunt 6 yo born in 1855 in Sittingbourn Kent, England. Jane Hunt was recorded as granddaughter of Chrlotte unt (RoweO, the head of the family. then in 1863 after Charlotte married John Gransden, Jane Hunt's name was changed to Jane Gransden. Head of family Charlotte and her two daughters Charlotte and Eliza were tailoresses. The residence was Pembles Buildings, High St Chatham.

4 June 1880: Charlotte Gransen nee Hunt 43yo, mother Charlotte Hunt nee Rowe 77yo and sons George 12yo born England, Arthur-7you born Pennsylvania are in the US 1880 census. Residing at 939 Otesgo St, Philidelphia. This address is consistent with the address givne in the obiturary for George Gransden when he died in Philadelphia in 1885.

The cause of death was Breast Cancer. She was buried 4 on 2 Jul 1915 in Fernwood Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.
Prior to her migration to the United States in the Fall of 1871, Jane was recorded in the 1871 England Census Record along with family members Anne Gransden (born earlier that year), mother Charlotte Gransden (nee Hunt), brother George, and grandmother Charlotte Hunt (nee Rowe). Jane (also referred to in family records as Esther Jane Gransden) along with other family members departed Liverpool, England aboard the White Star Line Ship "Atlantic" in late September 1871 and arrived in New York Harbor on October 10, 1871. Accompanying her on trip were Charlotte Gransden (nee Hunt) (age 38), George Gransden (age 3), Charlotte Hunt (age 55) and Clara Gransden (infant). They travelled by train to Harrisburg, PA. then by coach to Plymouth to reunite with loved ones. There is a George and Elizabeth Gransden (Grandson) family recorded in the Pennsylvania 1880 Census for Luzerne County, City of Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. It is possible that this is the destination of the Gransden family upon their arrival in the U.S. for John had a brother George. The trail ends there for the moment.
Jane died of breast cancer. At the time of her death, Jane resided at 1100 180th Street, Bronx, New York. She was buried July 2, 1915 in Fernwood Cemetery, Philadelphia, PA.
As a note of interest the sailing ship Atlantic ran aground on Marr's Rock, Meaghers Island, near Halifax, Nova Scotia on April 1, 1873 at 0300 hours, less than two years after the crossing that brought the Gransden family to the States. Of the 931 people on board, 585 were drowned. This information was obtained from the National Museums & Galleries on Merseyside, Liverpool, England.

A certified copy of an entry of birth obtained from the General Register Office in London, England confirms the birth of George Charles Gransden born to John Gransden and Charlotte Gransden (formally Hunt) on February 21, 1868. The place of birth was recorded as Luton Lane, Chatham. The registration district was Medway in the Sub-district of Gillingham in the County of Kent, England.
George migrated to the United States from his home in England along with other family members in the Fall of 1871.
Prior to departing England for the United States in the Fall of 1871, George C. Gransden was recorded in the 1871 England Census along with family members: Mother: Charlotte Gransden (born about 1835 in Sittingbourne, Kent, England); Sister Anne Gransden born early that year in Chatham, Kent; Sister Jane Gransden (Jane Hunt) born 1855 in Sittingborune, Kent; and grandmother Charlotte Hunt born about 1803 in Upchurch, Kent.
George, along with brother Arthur (age 7 born in Pennsylvania), mother Charlotte Gransden and grand mother Charlotte Hunt are recorded in the 1880 Census taken on 4 June 1880. They resided at 939 Otesga Street, Philadelphia.
Following is an extract from an old newspaper Death Notice clipping: "On the 7th inst., George C., son of Charlotte and the late John Gransden, aged 17 years. The relatives and friends of the family and Sunday School of Gloria Dei (Old Swedes') Church are respectfully invited to attend the funeral on this Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock, from his mother's residence 939 Otsego Street. To proceed to Old Swedes' Church for service and interment. The Gloria Dei Church is located at Christopher Columbus Boulevard and Christian Street, Philadelphia, PA 19147-4332.
